In 1945, newspaper publisher Arthur Kasherman was gunned down on a snowy street in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Was he a crusader for justice, or a low-life who angered the underworld once too many? Watch the video, read the stories and maybe you’ll solve a 65-year-old murder mystery.

I find this site a delight. Being a long time history buff, especially mob era history, I was delighted to read the Star/Tribune article today and find your site. Nice reporting and very interesting site.

However, I find your interactive map to very confused. If Kasherman and Von Wald were at Hannah’s prior to his being gunned down, how can the map show his death location as being in what appears to be either an alley or unnamed street half-way between 15th and 17th Streets?

The location of Hannah’s Cafe was Chicago Avenue and East 15th Street. The points on the map are closer than they appear to prevent the two points from “merging” with the mapping software (try zooming out). We did this to showcase the entire scene. I moved the location of Hannah’s Cafe to the other side of 14th Street and hopefully that will help. Thanks.

I agree with Ron that this site is great. A creative way to illuminate a forgotten topic in Minneapolis history using a variety of interactive tools.

Couple of little items: the popup text under the headline for Walter Ligget’s death has the same text as that for Guilford’s. And in the text in the first story the St. Paul newspaper referred to as the Pioneer was at that time called the Pioneer Press.

    Thanks for doing this project.

Wow. Love this site so much, especially the map. I live at 9th and Park, so it’s cool to see some of the history of my often forgotten corner of the city.
